Get ready for some serious cello magic! The 2025 Isang Yun Cello Competition has just announced its semi-finalists, and the talent is absolutely mind-blowing.
The competition is heating up! Ten incredible cellists have made it through to the next round, which will take place on November 5th and 6th in Tongyeong, South Korea. But here's where it gets controversial... these musicians are about to face a unique challenge that will push their skills to the limit.
Following the initial rounds on November 2nd and 3rd, the judges had the tough task of selecting just ten semi-finalists from an impressive pool of 24 participants. And this is the part most people miss: the journey doesn't end here. These semi-finalists now have to prepare an intense 45-50 minute recital with piano accompaniment.
The recital will feature a diverse range of pieces, including Isang Yun's 'Espace' (1992), one of Beethoven's op.102 sonatas, or a Brahms sonata. But that's not all - they also have to choose another work from a list of prescribed pieces by Schubert, Robert Schumann, Debussy, Shostakovich, and Prokofiev. Talk about a musical feast!
The pressure is on as the semi-finalists prepare for their performances, knowing that the final round awaits. The top performers will be invited to collaborate with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra on November 8th, where they'll have the chance to win a share of the KRW79,000,000 (£42,100) prize pool. The first prize alone is worth KRW30,000,000 (£16,000)!
This year's jury, led by Arto Noras, includes some of the most respected names in the industry: Clive Greensmith, Louise Hopkins, Doo-Min Kim, Kangho Lee, Troels Svane, Andreas Vierziger, Jian Wang, and Hiroyasu Yamamoto.
