Africa's Mining Industry: Exploring Cooperation with Russia and China (2025)

Africa's mining industry is experiencing a surge of interest, with Russia and China eager to forge new partnerships. This could reshape the continent's economic landscape. But what does this mean for Africa's future?

At the heart of this evolving story is the 'Russia-Africa Expo-2025,' which hosted a crucial roundtable discussion titled "The Potential of Africa’s Mining Industry: New Opportunities for Cooperation with Russia and China." This event, held at the Financial and Business Association of Euro-Asian Cooperation (FBAEAC), served as a pivotal platform for strengthening the collaborative efforts between Russia, China, and Africa in industrial and technological development.

The FBA EAC organized the roundtable, joined by several key co-organizers, including the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Council for Financial, Industrial, and Investment Policy, the Peace Foundation, the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University), and the company “Kapital-Info.”

Over **70 participants, including diplomats, business leaders, academics, and representatives from international organizations, gathered to discuss the future of mining in Africa.** Delegations from over 15 African countries, along with representatives from Russia, China, and Iran, were in attendance.

China's involvement was particularly notable. Key figures like Sun Yongjun, First Secretary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, and Liu Yan, Second Secretary, played significant roles. Representatives from the “Chongqing Pump Plant” joined online, underscoring the practical focus of this trilateral cooperation and the commitment to joint mining projects.

The African presence was equally impressive, with representatives from various nations, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritania, Rwanda, Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and others. The speakers emphasized Africa's eagerness to attract investment, embrace new technologies, and build sustainable production chains. Logistics, personnel training, and environmental concerns were also key topics.

Adding another layer to the discussion was the participation of Iran's Mehdi Rezazadeh, highlighting the cross-regional interest in expanding financial and technological cooperation within industry projects.

Li Shaobin, President of the FBA EAC, welcomed participants, emphasizing how cooperation in the mining industry opens new opportunities for Eurasian businesses. Ivan Borisovich Arkhipov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian-Chinese Friendship Society, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of strengthening humanitarian and economic ties.

Sergey Korotkov, Advisor to the President of the FBA EAC, presented a message from Vitaly Vovk of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EAEC). Vovk highlighted the discussion's potential to boost sectoral cooperation and offered the EAEC's support in developing collaborative mechanisms.

A highlight of the roundtable was a presentation by Roman Isakov, an expert in the mining industry, focusing on "Technologies and Standards of Russian Mining Companies." Anatoly Tkachuk from the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) discussed mechanisms for joint projects in the mining sector.

Additional Russian representatives included Daria Michurina (RSPP), Yury Malakhov, Alexander Kotlyarsky, Anton Vasilyev, Alexandra Matveeva, Viktor Lazutin, and Igor Khmelkov.

The roundtable was expertly moderated by Louis Gouend, founder of the African Business Club, and Anna Geroldovna Bezdudnaya, a doctor of economics from SPbSUE.

During the discussions, participants tackled a range of critical issues, including forming joint working groups, creating joint ventures, specialist training, financial support, environmental standards, and expanding logistics.

The consensus was clear: coordinating efforts between business communities, research centers, and government structures is crucial for successful investment and educational projects in the mining industry.

Key recommendations that emerged from the discussion include:

  • Establishing expert working groups for pilot project initiatives.
  • Increasing technology and equipment exchange with direct involvement from manufacturers and engineering companies.
  • Developing joint educational programs and academic exchanges for training qualified personnel.
  • Strengthening institutional project support through guarantee mechanisms and financial instruments.
  • Implementing unified environmental standards and sustainable development practices.
