Bezzecchi SHOCKS! Alex Marquez CRASHES | 2025 Portuguese MotoGP Qualifying Highlights (2025)

Imagine the roar of the engines, the thrill of the chase, and then... a dramatic upset! Marco Bezzecchi stole the show at the 2025 Portuguese MotoGP qualifying, snatching pole position in a stunning display of skill and speed. But here's the kicker: Alex Marquez, who dominated Friday's practice sessions and seemed destined for pole, crashed out, leaving everyone wondering what could have been.

Marquez, riding for Gresini Ducati, had topped both Friday sessions at Portimao, making it look almost effortless. Many suspected he was a shoo-in for the pole position on Saturday morning. But fate, as it often does in MotoGP, had other plans. A late crash in Q2 means he'll be starting from a frustrating fifth on the grid. Talk about a plot twist!

For the second time in just three races, a Ducati rider failed to secure a front-row start. Instead, it was Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi who reigned supreme, clocking a blistering 1m37.556s – a full 0.150 seconds faster than the rest of the field. This is Bezzecchi's fourth pole position of the 2025 season, solidifying his position as a serious contender.

Alongside Bezzecchi on the front row will be Pedro Acosta, celebrating his first front-row start of the season – a significant milestone for the young rider. And in a surprising turn of events, Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo, who had to battle his way through Q1, secured a remarkable third position.

Quartararo's experience in Q1 proved invaluable. The damp conditions early in the morning in Portugal made track conditions tricky, and his time in Q1 allowed him to get a handle on the drying surface. He initially set the pace in Q2 with a 1m38.518s lap, before Alex Marquez briefly took over with a 1m38.098s.

Bezzecchi was hot on Marquez's heels, just 0.027s behind after his first run on the factory Aprilia. The tension was palpable.

Then, with just three minutes remaining in the 15-minute session, Bezzecchi unleashed a stunning 1m37.556s lap, catapulting himself into provisional pole position.

But the drama wasn't over. A minute later, Alex Marquez's hopes were dashed when he crashed at Turn 3. This effectively ended his chance to fight for pole, a devastating blow after his dominant performance on Friday.

Despite some valiant efforts from his rivals in the final laps, nobody could dethrone Bezzecchi. He had earned his fourth pole of the season.

Reigning world champion Pecco Bagnaia will lead the second row on the leading Ducati, setting a final lap time of 1m37.935s. Alex Marquez will be starting alongside him, undoubtedly eager to make amends for his qualifying crash.

Johann Zarco managed to get his LCR Honda onto the back of the second row in sixth place, ahead of his factory HRC counterpart, Joan Mir. A decent result for Honda, but still a long way from the front.

Jack Miller, following Yamaha stablemate Quartararo through Q1, could only manage eighth on the Pramac-run M1. VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio and Tech3 KTM stand-in Pol Espargaro rounded out the top ten.

Fermin Aldeguer finished 11th on the sister Gresini Ducati, while Trackhouse rookie Ai Ogura completed the top 12.

Honda’s Luca Marini missed out on a Q2 spot and will start 13th, followed by KTM’s Brad Binder. Franco Morbidelli, in 15th, narrowly avoided a penalty after a close call with Pramac’s Miguel Oliveira in Q1.

MotoGP debutant Nicolo Bulega will start from 18th on the factory Ducati. A late mistake on what could have been a fast lap ruined his chances of a better qualifying result. This is the part most people miss: even the smallest error at this level has huge consequences.

So, Bezzecchi takes pole, Marquez crashes, and Quartararo surprises. What a qualifying session! But here's where it gets controversial... Some are saying Marquez pushed too hard too early, while others believe it was just an unlucky racing incident. What do you think? Was Marquez too aggressive, or was he simply a victim of circumstance? And can he recover from fifth on the grid to challenge for the win? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
