Breaking News: ByHeart Baby Formula Recall - 10 States Affected by Infant Botulism Outbreak (2025)

A baby formula recall has sparked concern across 10 states, with infants' health at stake. But is the product really to blame?

Amid a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism, ByHeart, a producer of organic baby formula, has initiated a recall. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked the outbreak to ByHeart's Whole Nutrition Infant Formula, with 13 hospitalizations reported since August. Thankfully, no deaths have occurred.

The recall involves two lots of powdered formula with December 1st 'use by' dates and specific lot numbers: 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2. The FDA urges parents and caregivers to discard the product and record its details. Retailers are cooperating to remove potentially contaminated items.

Infant botulism, a bacterial toxin, can lead to severe symptoms like constipation, difficulty feeding, and even paralysis or death. The FDA advises close monitoring of children who recently consumed ByHeart formula, as symptoms may appear gradually.

Cases have emerged in 10 states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. ByHeart, based in New York City, claims no botulism has been detected in its product, despite FDA estimates of 83 infant botulism cases nationwide, with 13 linked to the formula.

ByHeart asserts it is taking proactive measures to ensure infant safety, stating, 'The FDA has not identified a direct link between any infant formula and these cases.' However, the FDA is investigating the contamination source and potential impacts on other products.

Interestingly, California health officials noted a rise in infant botulism among ByHeart consumers since August. ByHeart markets its formula as a healthier, organic alternative, resembling breast milk. Yet, it accounts for less than 1% of U.S. baby formula sales.

Infant botulism can be treated with BabyBIG, an FDA-approved medication. As the investigation unfolds, the question remains: Is ByHeart solely responsible, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts below!
