Dan Trachtenberg's Vision for Predator: Badlands - A Subtle Alien Connection (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling ride as we dive into the world of Predator: Badlands and its intriguing connection to the iconic Alien franchise! But here's the twist: director Dan Trachtenberg aims to craft a narrative that's not just a simple mashup, but a sophisticated blend of these two iconic universes.

While the trailers for Predator: Badlands have focused more on creating an atmospheric vibe, they've also dropped subtle hints about its connection to Alien. Elle Fanning's character, Thia, is revealed to be a Weyland-Yutani synthetic, and fans have spotted a Power Loader-like machine in the promos, sparking speculation about a secret Alien vs. Predator movie or at least a setup for one.

Trachtenberg, however, wants to take a different approach. He admits that he wanted the link between the franchises to be more nuanced and less like a crude collision of action figures. "It's about finding a way to include elements from spiritually connected cinematic universes and weaving them into one story, one movie. That's far more captivating than just pitting 'the big thing' against 'the big thing' from another franchise!" he explains.

Predator: Badlands follows Dek, a Yautja 'runt', as he embarks on a quest to take down the galaxy's most formidable foe, the Kalisk, on the most dangerous planet in the universe. Along the way, he crosses paths with Thia, a legless bot with a bubbly personality that initially rubs him the wrong way. But as their journey progresses, they form an unlikely alliance, challenging the Yautja Codex's claim that their species is 'friend to none'.

Trachtenberg's suggestion that this crossover could "grow into a bigger thing" is certainly tantalizing, especially considering his previous comments about the future of the sci-fi saga. He reveals, "After Prey, I started brainstorming sequel ideas, and I had three concepts in mind. Killers is one, Badlands is another, and the third is something else entirely. I felt compelled to bring these to life quickly, partly because I could multitask with animation. I was eager to get to that third idea!"

So, what could this third idea be? We can only speculate, but one thing's for sure: Trachtenberg has a vision for expanding this universe in a way that respects the source material while also pushing boundaries. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the action; it's about the intricate storytelling and world-building that makes these franchises so beloved.

What are your thoughts on Predator: Badlands and its potential Alien crossover? Do you think Trachtenberg's approach will deliver a fresh and engaging experience, or is it a risky move that could divide fans? Let's discuss in the comments!
