Denver Wellness Studio Upswell Pauses Operations Amid Regulatory Challenges (2026)

A popular fitness studio and spa is facing a challenging situation, leaving its future uncertain. Upswell, a wellness club in Denver, is rethinking its operations due to regulatory confusion.

Heather Holland, the founder and CEO, has decided to temporarily halt membership sales and reassess the business strategy. This decision comes after Upswell's groundbreaking introduction of a unique wellness model to the city. Holland explains, "We're taking a deliberate break to integrate our experiences into a sustainable long-term plan."

But here's where it gets tricky: the club's three locations are now operating on a reduced schedule, open only three days a week instead of seven. This change includes a range of wellness services like saunas, cold plunges, and various therapies, as well as yoga and pilates classes.

Initially, Holland planned a complete pause, but member feedback prompted a modified approach. The reduced hours are a compromise, and Holland aims to resume full operations early next year, with membership prices similar to the previous $189 monthly fee.

The core issue revolves around the South Broadway location, which closed a month ago due to unclear regulations regarding its above-ground cold plunge pool. Holland highlights the regulatory discrepancy between in-ground and above-ground pools in Denver, particularly concerning temperature regulations for cold water.

The other two locations, in RiNo and Central Park, have different circumstances. The RiNo studio has an in-ground pool, avoiding the regulatory ambiguity, while the Central Park location, being in Aurora, faces less fluctuating requirements.

And this is the part that could divide opinions: Holland is considering a significant renovation to accommodate an in-ground cold plunge at South Broadway, which would be a costly endeavor. Alternatively, she might decide to close this location altogether. The decision is crucial as members spend a significant portion of their time at the cold plunge and sauna, and the South Broadway location has been an innovation hub.

When Upswell reopens, members can anticipate a more personalized experience. Holland plans to tailor staffing, hours, and classes to the unique needs of each neighborhood. This strategy aims to optimize costs and enhance member satisfaction.

Upswell boasts impressive retention rates, a critical factor for any membership-based business. Holland emphasizes the importance of understanding the optimal number of members and retention rates to ensure long-term success without constantly seeking new members.
