A Surprising Side Effect of GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs: Scurvy

Some patients taking GLP-1 medications are developing scurvy, a condition caused by severe vitamin C deficiency. While these drugs effectively suppress appetite, they may also lead to nutrient-poor diets, putting users at risk of vitamin deficiencies that can impact bone, brain, gut, skin health, and muscle mass.
The issue is highlighted by a recent review from Australia's University of Newcastle, which found that only two out of 41 controlled GLP-1 trials evaluated overall nutrition, and only one study published the results. This raises concerns about the potential for malnutrition among users of these drugs.
"Nutrition plays a critical role in health, and right now it's largely missing from the evidence," said Clare Collins, a nutrition and dietetics professor at the university. "When people are eating less, the quality of what they eat matters even more."
The review also cited case reports of thiamine (vitamin B1) and protein deficiencies in addition to scurvy cases, urging health systems to address the issue before deficiencies become common. Collins recommends that general practitioners' chronic disease plans for GLP-1 users routinely include referrals to dietitians.
