Japan's anime industry is booming, and the numbers are staggering! In 2024, the industry expanded by a whopping 15 percent to reach a record-breaking $25 billion in revenue. But here's the real shocker: the international market is driving this growth, with overseas revenue accounting for over half of the total sales.
The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) revealed these insights at the TIFFCOM content market, leaving industry experts in awe. The report highlights a significant shift in the anime landscape, as Japan's beloved art form conquers the world. With a 14.8 percent surge in revenue, the industry is thriving, and the global demand for anime is undeniable.
And this is where it gets interesting: the overseas market's dominance is growing. In 2024, international sales contributed a massive 56 percent of the total revenue, amounting to $14.25 billion. This is in stark contrast to the Japanese domestic market, which brought in $10.97 billion, or 44 percent. But is this a cause for celebration or concern for the domestic industry?

He attributes this growth to bundled contracts that go beyond content distribution, encompassing theatrical rights, streaming, merchandising, and events.
But wait, there's more! The report doesn't even include the phenomenal success of recent anime films. 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' and 'Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc' have collectively grossed over $800 million worldwide, with the former becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film ever.
The AJA has diligently tracked the industry's growth for over two decades, witnessing consistent expansion, even during the pandemic. Since 2009, the anime business has been on a steady upward trajectory, with international revenues surpassing domestic sales for the first time in 2020.
Anime studios, the industry's powerhouse, also experienced record growth in 2024, with a 9.1 percent increase in sales. Interestingly, overseas studio revenue reached $781 million, emphasizing that the creative talent within Japan remains a driving force behind the global success of anime.
