Johann Zarco's MotoGP Future: A Tale of Experience and Opportunity
The veteran French rider Johann Zarco, the oldest on the MotoGP grid, is not ready to hang up his helmet just yet. With a renewed sense of vigor, he's eyeing a potential extension beyond 2027, defying the initial expectations that his 2024 move to Ducati-to-LCR Honda would be his last MotoGP contract.
Zarco's renewed enthusiasm stems from the fresh challenge presented by the new 850cc machines and tyres, offering a unique opportunity to leverage his experience. The 35-year-old, who dominated as the top RCV rider for the past two seasons, achieved a memorable home victory at Le Mans and a dry podium at Silverstone this year, successfully defending Honda's Suzuka 8 Hours crown.
This impressive performance led to a two-year extension with HRC, which Zarco now views as a potential last hurrah in the premier class. He initially thought his 2023 contract would end in 2025, but a second wind has given him the energy to consider two more years.
Zarco's future contract includes a significant upgrade: access to new parts at the same time as the official HRC team, ensuring his bike is on par with the factory riders throughout the year. However, he's also adaptable, understanding that if the factory team progresses faster, he'll need to adjust accordingly.
Despite remaining with LCR, Zarco's 2026 season will bring a new teammate, as reigning Moto2 champion Diogo Moreira replaces Somkiat Chantra. With a strong performance this year, finishing twelfth in the world championship six points ahead of HRC's Luca Marini, and a podium finish alongside Joan Mir, Zarco's future in MotoGP remains bright, leaving fans eagerly anticipating his next move.
