Hold onto your hats, Formula 1 fans! Lando Norris set the pace in the second practice session for the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but the drama was just getting started. This session was a whirlwind of speed, near-crashes, and surprising performances.
Norris, driving for McLaren, clocked in a blistering lap of 1 minute 23.083 seconds using Pirelli's soft tires. This put him ahead of the reigning four-time World Champion, Max Verstappen of Red Bull, by a significant 0.363 seconds. Mercedes' George Russell secured third place, just a hair behind.
But here's where it gets controversial... Early in the session, Verstappen and Norris had a close call exiting Turn 1. There was confusion over the radio, and Verstappen had to swerve to avoid a collision. The stewards investigated, but ultimately decided against any penalties. Do you think the stewards made the right call?
The session saw a mix of familiar faces and rising stars. After a first practice session that featured several 'rookie' drivers, the regular racers were back in the cockpits for the more representative twilight FP2. Oscar Piastri, Norris's teammate, started the weekend in 11th place after sitting out the first practice.
As the session progressed, the competition intensified. Isack Hadjar, a Racing Bulls rookie, briefly led the pack. However, Norris, after switching to the soft tires, surged ahead with his impressive lap time.
Meanwhile, Piastri's qualifying simulation didn't go as planned, leaving him in 10th place. Williams also faced challenges, with Carlos Sainz experiencing a dramatic moment and Alex Albon dealing with apparent engine issues.
The focus then shifted to longer runs to gather data for Sunday's race. Norris's earlier time held firm, securing him the top spot ahead of Verstappen and Russell.
Ollie Bearman, a Haas rookie, put in a strong performance, finishing fourth. Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto from Sauber also impressed. Hadjar continued his strong start to the weekend, finishing seventh.
The rest of the field saw a mix of familiar names, with Fernando Alonso, Kimi Antonelli, and Lance Stroll all in the mix.
Drivers and teams will now analyze the data and make adjustments before Saturday's final practice session.
