A Historic Union: Uniting Faith and Service
Two congregations, one legacy, and a powerful merger that will shape the future of Catholic education.
On November 4th, a significant event took place, bringing together the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Loreto Sisters as they are affectionately known, with the Congregation of Jesus (CJ). This merger, a rare occurrence in the religious world, has sparked curiosity and excitement among those familiar with these dedicated sisters.
But here's where it gets intriguing: despite the union, the Loreto Sisters will continue to be recognized by their familiar name, while officially adopting the title of Congregation of Jesus. It's a delicate balance, and one that raises questions about the impact of such a change.
"Mary Ward, the visionary founder of both congregations, would undoubtedly be proud of this merger," shared Sr. Ginger Downey, OLVM, with a sense of awe. "Her charism, a guiding light for these sisters, will now shine even brighter as their spiritual journey deepens under the new configuration."
The story of the Loreto Sisters' arrival in Phoenix is one of faith and adventure. Invited by Fr. Paul Smith in the 1950s, five brave sisters left their Irish homeland to embark on a mission of Catholic education in Arizona. Little did they know, their impact would be felt for generations to come.
"The trust they placed in God's providence has resulted in an immeasurable blessing for our parish and school," Sr. Ginger continued. "Their dedication to Catholic education has shaped countless lives, instilling the values and spirit of their foundress."
As we celebrate this historic merger, we can't help but wonder: What impact will this union have on the future of Catholic education? And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the name change; it's about the continued growth and evolution of a legacy that spans continents and generations.
