Mark Alexander's third and final term as South African Rugby Union (SARU) president is a significant development in the world of rugby, especially given the sport's recent global triumphs. Personally, I think it's a testament to Alexander's leadership that he has been nominated by representatives of 11 of SARU's member unions, despite the challenges and controversies that have marked his tenure. What makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between the achievements of the Springboks and the internal dynamics of SARU. While the Springboks have become the dominant force in world rugby, winning back-to-back World Cups in 2019 and 2023, SARU has faced its fair share of issues, including the resignation of Oregan Hoskins and the hosting of a British & Irish Lions series during the Covid pandemic. In my opinion, Alexander's leadership has been instrumental in navigating these challenges and ensuring the continued success of South African rugby. However, the nomination process for the SARU Executive Council positions is a cause for concern. The fact that the current holders of the roles, Hennie Baartman and Randall September, are standing for election for a second term, while being opposed by several candidates, suggests a level of internal division. This raises a deeper question about the future direction of SARU and the balance of power within the organization. What this really suggests is that, while the Springboks have achieved great success, the internal governance of SARU needs to be addressed to ensure the long-term stability and growth of the sport in South Africa. As we look ahead to Alexander's new term, it will be crucial to see how he navigates these internal challenges and continues to promote the growth and development of rugby in South Africa. In my view, the future of SARU depends on his ability to foster unity and collaboration among the member unions, while also addressing the concerns of those who have nominated alternative candidates. Only time will tell if Alexander can achieve this, but one thing that immediately stands out is the need for a more inclusive and transparent approach to leadership in South African rugby.
