Night Time Gas Station Shenanigans on the Florida Trail | Thru-Hiking Adventure (2026)

Unraveling the Nighttime Gas Station Adventure: A Trekker's Tale

Exhausted, I collapsed into bed last night, knowing that our journey had only just begun. With six more weeks of long miles ahead, today's 40-mile trek was just the start. Rising early, we left the motel as the sun peeked over the horizon, determined to make the most of each day.

Our journey began at the Days Inn in Navarre Beach, where we embarked on a road-walking adventure. A quick stop at a gas station for breakfast and coffee fueled our spirits, and we continued along the road for an hour or so. A mix of trail and road walking lay ahead, but the majority of our day would be spent in the peaceful forest, a welcome respite from the direct sunlight.

The Florida Trail, with its flat terrain and wooden boardwalks, felt like a familiar friend. Though the trail had a few small hills, the flatness of Florida's landscape made even the slightest incline feel like a challenge. We took breaks, refilled our water, and enjoyed the cushioned pine-covered trail, appreciating the wooden boardwalks that lined our path.

As we progressed, a familiar section of the trail brought back memories. Crossing an old road, I had a moment of recognition and spotted a boat, stranded in the middle of nowhere. A remnant from a flood or a forgotten adventure, the beached boat was a curious sight, full of untold stories.

The trail crossed a main road again in the afternoon, and we found ourselves on the road for a stretch. With a large shoulder or a separate walking path along a bridge, we felt safe and comfortable. The temperature was perfect, and the day was passing by smoothly, just as I had hoped.

As the day progressed, we realized that our route would take us past a gas station at the end of our journey. The prospect of ending our 40-mile trek with a stop at a gas station filled me with excitement. It's the perfect way to cap off a long day, almost as good as ending it in a cozy bed.

By 1 PM, we had covered 20 miles, a great pace that promised an early finish. Starting early has its perks, and I had maintained an incredible routine for most of the year. However, towards the end, my schedule slipped, and I found myself hiking later into the night. Getting back on track feels good, and I'm eager to regain my rhythm.

As we approached the halfway point, we took a break and then pushed on, covering solid mileage. Time flew by, and soon it was 4 PM, with the sun about to set. We passed the junction where the Black Water Trail and the Florida Trail connect, a crucial section of the Eastern Continental Trail. In 2023, I had hiked this trail with Beer Run, and the memories came flooding back.

Continuing south along the Florida Trail, I reflected on my earlier journey this year. Punisher and I had chosen a different route, heading north towards Tallahassee and Alabama, which saved us time and energy. Now, I find myself back on the same trail, embarking on a familiar adventure.

As the sun set, we enjoyed the last hours of daylight, following a wide, pine-needle-covered trail. The final stretch of the day took us into the night, and we stopped for a final break before pushing on to the road that led to the gas station. Tomorrow promises more road walking, a welcome change from the trail.

Road walking can be tough on the body, but it has its advantages. With phone service, time flies as you occupy yourself with calls and messages. For me, the ideal trail condition is a wide, flat section of forest, covered in pine or dirt, offering a dry and obstacle-free path.

Arriving at the gas station around 8:30-9 PM, we grabbed some drinks, snacks, and ice cream for dinner. Sitting on a bench outside, we witnessed a curious scene. A man, asleep at the wheel of his car, had parked at the gas pumps, and his slumber turned into quite the spectacle.

After a while at the gas station, we continued to find a campsite. We made our way to a park, and to our delight, we found a covered pavilion with picnic tables and a cement ground. It was the perfect spot to set up our air mattresses, and the table provided a convenient space to organize our gear.

Today's journey was another long one, covering over 40 miles. Once we settled into our camp, I had a quick bite before turning in for the night. With big miles ahead, I decided to give myself a break from editing and video work, a well-deserved respite after over 11 months of real-time updates.
