Disney's EPCOT Norway Pavilion Gets a Veteran's Touch
A remarkable transformation has taken place at the Norway Pavilion in EPCOT, thanks to the leadership of Air Force veteran Rosa, who brought her military expertise to the world of theme park magic. But how does one go from serving in the military to leading a Disney project? It's a fascinating journey that showcases the power of transferable skills and the value of diverse experiences.
Rosa, an Associate Project Manager, dedicated 24 years of her life to the US Air Force. Her transition to Disney was made possible by the 'Heroes Work Here' veteran hiring initiative, which recognizes the immense potential of veterans in various roles. Rosa found her niche in Disney's Facility Asset Management (FAM), where her military-honed leadership and commitment to excellence were right at home.
'The military trains you to lead and care for your team,' Rosa explains, 'and FAM's values of ownership, value, and trust mirror the military's core principles.' This alignment of values made her role in the Norway Pavilion refresh a natural fit. Nearly 350 cast members work in FAM across Walt Disney World, each contributing to the unforgettable experiences that Disney is renowned for.
The Norway Pavilion refresh was a meticulous process, with Rosa emphasizing that 'every detail matters.' From the rockwork surrounding the waterfall to the paint touches and aged finishes, Rosa's team of artisans and specialists used over 200 colors and stains to create a truly immersive environment. The pavilion's design takes visitors on a journey through Norway, from urban Oslo to the tranquility of log buildings and sod roofs in the countryside.
The updates include a charming snack kiosk inspired by traditional Norwegian stabbur cabins and the reopening of Frozen Ever After with enhanced Audio-Animatronics and lighting. These additions further elevate the guest experience, ensuring that every visit is memorable.
And here's where it gets controversial: some might argue that theme parks should focus solely on entertainment. But Rosa's story proves that Disney's commitment to hiring veterans and creating immersive experiences goes beyond mere fun. It's about honoring skills, fostering community, and providing opportunities for personal growth.
What do you think? Are theme parks more than just entertainment? Can they serve as platforms for celebrating diverse talents and experiences? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let's continue exploring the magic of Disney's veteran-led initiatives!
