Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, home to the world's largest collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, is expanding its reach with a new outpost in Eindhoven. This move marks a significant step in making the museum's extensive collection more accessible to the southern regions of the country. The museum, which currently displays only a fraction of its over 1 million objects, plans to construct a 3,500 square meter center over the next six to eight years. The new location, situated in parkland by the River Dommel and near Eindhoven's central railway station, will be supported by the city council and ASML, a semiconductor machinery manufacturer in nearby Veldhoven. Taco Dibbits, the director of the Rijksmuseum, emphasizes the museum's commitment to sharing its collection, stating, 'The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven represents an important step in making the collection even more accessible in the south of the country.' The museum's collection includes masterpieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt's iconic 'The Night Watch'. However, the museum's popularity has led to overtourism concerns in Amsterdam, attracting nearly 2.5 million visitors last year. Eindhoven, the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands by population, is a major technology hub and has a long-standing association with the consumer electronics company Philips. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the former Dutch finance minister and current mayor of Eindhoven, praises the new museum's potential, stating, 'The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven will be a valuable addition to the cultural landscape of Brabant and beyond, becoming a place where everyone can enjoy a unique blend of history and creativity.' This expansion follows the trend of European museums opening outposts in unexpected locations. The Louvre in Paris opened a branch in Lens, a former mining town in northern France, in 2012, and another in Abu Dhabi in 2017. London's V&A, specializing in applied arts, is set to open a branch in the city's former Olympic park in April, with its East Storehouse already welcoming art enthusiasts in May. The Rijksmuseum's new location in Eindhoven promises to bring a unique blend of history and creativity to the region, while also addressing the need for more accessible cultural experiences in the south of the country.
